Reliable over-the-counter
pimple fighters.

Most over the counter acne fighters contain salicylic acid, a peeling agent, while others contain benzoyl peroxide (a disinfectant at one time labeled as a possible carcinogen), or hydrogen peroxide. And although the saturation varied, our testers agreed that there is no correlation with how well the product worked.

If all else fail, you can always apply a slice of aloe vera on the effected area for 15 minutes to reduce inflammation.

Or sometimes, your skin will thank you if you simply clean your face without overloading with beauty products.

Biodroga Anti-Blemish Creme
This lactic and salicylic acid in a 45% alcohol solution works well, bringing down the size of the pimples by half or more overnight. It's gentle. The first aid of choice for the occasional breakouts. Good for all ages.

D'Arcy Drying Lotion
2% salicylic acid solution is easy to apply with a Q-tip. It's an age old idea. Unfortunately, it leaves a white powdery residue that can be wiped off.

Janet Sartin White Astringent
It feels nice and cool, and it stings in a gentle way. Great for an overnight treatment for women in uppper 20s to 30s.

MD Formulations Glycare Acne Gel
This contains 1% salicylic acid, 35% alcohol and 5% or 10% glycolic acid in solution. The cool clear gel feels minty and has 1% salicylic acid in a base containing 5% glycolic acid.
